The Plan

What is the plan?

We plan to offer FTTH (Fibre To The Home) to all properties in the Michaelston-y-Fedw area. This will deliver an internet speed of 1Gbps. Typically, superfast broadband is provided with FTTC (Fibre To The Cabinet) with the final leg from the cabinet to your property on copper cable which slows down the connection to maximum speeds of up to 70Mb but only people within a few yards of the cabinet actually see that sort of speed.

Below is a map of the area and properties that can be included in the scheme. Red dots indicate properties that have already registered an interest. The scheme will be fully funded by the community before it starts with investments (see below).

How much will it cost?

Our plan it so connect every property free of charge and also to provide free broadband for the first year. After the first year there will be a monthly charge of £30 for each property. If, after the first year, you no longer wish to continue with the Michaelston-y-Fedw Internet Ultra-Broadband service you can be disconnected at no cost and change your broadband to another company.

How can it be installed for free?

Of course, nothing in life is free! There will be a cost to Michaelston-y-Fedw Internet for the installation but we aim to cover this by investments and a grant scheme with the Welsh Government that offers £800 for each property that is connected to a broadband connection that gives a speed of more than 30Mb. That is why we need as many properties as possible to get connected.

Will I need to do anything?

Each property will be responsible for arranging for their property to be spliced into the main ring. This is a simple case of burying a cable in a small trench running from the property to the main ring that will, in most cases, pass near the property. We know not everyone will have the muscles/skill to do this and we will help out where this is an issue. A similar scheme in Lancashire have already done this and from their experience most properties can be connected by just two people in around 3 hours (see their video below). The final part is for us to connect the cable to a router which we provide. We only ask that the router is sited near an outside wall where the cable enters the property.

How long will it take?

So far progress has been swift. It is possible we could connect our first customers early in 2018 and we hope to complete the project by Autumn 2018.

How do I sign up?

Just complete the form at the bottom of this page. We will do the rest.

Investment in Michaelston-y-Fedw Internet

You do not have to invest in order to connect, but if you wish to, you can. The minimum investment is £500 and the maximum is £20,000. The Community Interest Company ‘CIC’ we set up will qualify for the Seed Enterprise Investment Scheme ‘SEIS’. As an example, if you are a UK tax payer and your tax bill is £ 5,000.00 per year, invest £10,000.00 in the company and you will not have to pay your £ 5,000.00 tax bill for that year. You do however have to invest the money for 3 years.
