Michaelston-y-Fedw Internet CIC is a company set up by residents of this small Welsh village to bring Hyperfast broadband to the area.

The aim is to provide a broadband connection with a speed of up to 1 Gigabit per second (1Gbps) to each property that has applied to be included in the scheme.

Below shows the number of application forms we have received against the number we require to make the scheme viable. Every application over our target secures the future of the scheme and, of course, ensures you get a connection and first year of Internet for free.

Great News. We have reached our target to make the scheme viable!

You may be thinking...

But we’ve got BT coming

You may have heard that BT’s faster broadband is on its way, so why should we bother with Michaelston-y-Fedw Internet.

BT’s system was supposed to have been here in 2015 but because they found out that we are too far from our local cabinet they were unable to connect us at that time.  But don’t worry, they are ‘exploring solutions’ even though they are still unable to give us any proposed connection dates.   So, we may get connected sometime in the next year or two…. and even then not every household will be connected.

And you may also be thinking…

BT Infinity is convenient

We barely have to lift a finger or invest a penny; a fibre connection will be on our doorstep soon (well, to a cabinet nearby, or not so near, anyway).

Michaelston-y-Fedw Internet is a Community Project which will be owned, and run by our community and it will provide a vastly superior service, along with many other benefits.

But isn't BT Infinity cheaper?

No, because Michaelston-y-Fedw Internet propose to charge less than any BT Infinity package.

BT Infinity will be ‘fast enough for me’

Well it may be fast enough for now but what about in a few years time.  Whatever BT does to their network, the length of copper cable between the BT cabinet and your property will always be a bottleneck. The further away from the cabinet you are, the worse the service will be.

Just think how use of the Internet in your home has changed over the past 10 years with the increase in connected devices such as computers, laptops, tablets, smartphones, Internet Radio and smart TVs. The use of connected devices in the home is growing: CCTV, baby monitors, pet monitors, door entry, fridges, freezers, etc. Who knows what's over the horizon?

The BBC is already migrating channels to online-only (BBC3 has already moved online, BBC News could follow). People's viewing habits are changing, with more and more people watching Catch-up TV. The ‘video shop’ is a thing of the past with films now streamed via Netflix & Amazon instantly, and wouldn’t you love to speak with family members across the world via a clear, smooth, HD video call…for free?

Michaelston-y-Fedw Internet WILL BE MUCH FASTER:

The 100% fibre optic network offers one of the fastest residential connections in the world.

What about my BT phone line?

You won't need that any more as phone calls can be made over the Internet using VOIP. How many people use their mobiles now in place of their landline phone for phone calls? Many households only have a land line to provide Internet connection. So, no more line rentals either.

So, Michaelston-y-Fedw Internet’s advantages are

Michaelston-y-Fedw Internet will be cheaper

BT’s Infinity packages are all more expensive, yet offer a MUCH slower connection.

Michaelston-y-Fedw Internet will stay competitive

Operating as a Community Benefit and “not for profit” social enterprise means costs can be kept low.

Michaelston-y-Fedw Internet will be much faster

At 1 Gbps that is about 15 times quicker download and over 50 times quicker upload than BT Infinity

Michaelston-y-Fedw Internet is for everyone

For children, allowing them access to the developing resources of online educational material and for children with special needs who are now receiving tailored education purely via the internet.

For grown-ups, allowing you high-speed access to the internet whilst other family members are already using it and it will be a huge asset for those who work from home.

Michaelston-y-Fedw Internet will help local employment

Local people will install our network and provide training to volunteers, giving them valuable skills for better employment opportunities.

Michaelston-y-Fedw Internet is for our local community

The network is ‘ours’ in that it will be dug, installed and connected by ordinary people from our area.  The community benefit company will be owned by local shareholders and any profits can only be used on projects which will benefit our community.

Michaelston-y-Fedw Internet has the feel good factor

That’s the feeling which comes from everyone working together as a community and getting things done, for the benefit of our community now, and into the long-term future.  BT Plc and its shareholders can’t offer this!

Michaelston-y-Fedw Internet and the value of your home

The Daily Telegraph has reported that slow broadband wipes 20% off house prices, whilst The Daily Mail estimates faster broadband can add 5 to 10% to house prices.

How do we fund the scheme?

The Government offers a grant to the company, of £800.00 for each household that signs up to the project for at least its first 12 months.

The grant becomes available once the system is connected to a home.

We aim to provide 12 months free connection and free broadband to all households who sign up in time for us to be able to claim their grants
